In 2014, John and Kathy were introduced to the amazing leaders, physicians, nurses, and staff at Lawndale Christian Health Center in North Lawndale. Their goal is to provide exceptional care for their community, in spite of the socioeconomic and racial disparities that have plagued North Lawndale and its neighboring communities. After years of relationship building, Schreiber Philanthropy increased its support of LCHC in 2020 and 2021 as the Federally-Qualified Health Center navigated the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Throughout those difficult years, the leadership at LCHC continued to dream big, and in 2022, John and Kathy made a $5M grant to support the construction of a teaching health center, where their residents could be more effectively trained for their future in community health work. At the same time, the Schreibers made a $1M commitment to build an endowment to support some tuition reimbursement for their family medicine residents, with the goal of supporting a staff that represents the community.
